Search Karnes County Court Dockets

A Karnes County court docket is the running schedule and event record for a case, but no single office keeps every docket in the county. To search the Karnes County court docket, begin with the court that received the case: district, constitutional county, justice, or municipal. The local Tyler public-access portal is the principal online doorway, while weekly district docket PDFs, court calendars, and the responsible clerk provide essential alternatives. A Karnes County court docket search works best with a cause or citation number and a known court, followed by direct confirmation before a hearing.

The Karnes Tyler Search Gateway

Both the County Clerk and the District Clerk point the public to one address. It is the county's Tyler public-access address. The landing page is meant to serve criminal, civil, family, and probate searches. It sometimes returns an access restriction. A visitor may hit locked fields or hidden documents. Treat it as an official starting point, not a promise of every file image.

Tyler will not always load. District readers can fall back on the weekly 81st/218th PDFs and calendar. County Court readers can check the calendars linked by the Karnes County Clerk. Justice and municipal matters go through the issuing precinct or city. Statewide re:SearchTX offers another public-search route. There the court and document category are integrated.

Portal unavailable? Keep the case number and court name, then move to the posted docket, court coordinator, or clerk. An access error is not a case-status result.

What a Court Docket Shows

A docket lays out a case's identity, chronology, and settings. The Karnes district PDFs are calendar snapshots, not complete electronic files. Each header names the 81st/218th courts and Karnes County. It also lists the docket type, the run date, and the setting date. Case blocks may add a filing date and time. Attorney roles, case type, case age, and setting comments can appear too. The underlying pleadings and signed orders are another story. They often take a separate record request.

Cause numberThe stable identifier to use with a clerk or coordinator.
Style of caseThe caption identifying the roles of the parties; it is not a finding.
Docket typeLocal labels include APPEAR, TRIAL, DWOP, criminal, civil, and additions.
Setting fieldsDate, time, reason set, and setting comment must be read together.
Court and judgeKARN identifies the county; D, W, and VJ are calendar judge codes.
DispositionAn outcome or status event; obtain the signed order for official proof.

Why KARN Appears on District Dockets

The 81st and 218th Judicial District Courts share calendars. Atascosa, Frio, Karnes, La Salle, and Wilson counties are all covered. Their shorthand codes are ATAS, FRIO, KARN, LASA, and WILS. That is why a Karnes County court docket can appear on a regional court website. The filename may even contain KARN. Picking the right county code matters as much as picking criminal or civil.

CR / CV
Criminal or civil docket category.
ARR
Arraignment, a criminal setting rather than a final outcome.
JDC
Jury docket call, described locally as a pretrial conference.
JT / NJ
Jury-trial or non-jury setting.
DWOP
Dismissal-for-want-of-prosecution docket; the label alone does not prove dismissal.

"NO MORE SETTINGS" means the day's calendar has no additional opening. It does not dismiss a filed case. A comment like "RESET FROM" records scheduling history, which is not the same as a signed continuance or final order.

Which Courts Keep Dockets

The filing court decides which office holds the docket. Denise Rodriguez, District Clerk, keeps district civil, family, felony, and juvenile files. Jamie Leal, County Clerk, keeps constitutional County Court misdemeanor, probate, and assigned county civil records. Four justice precincts keep their own lower-level matters. So do the municipal courts. No single lookup covers all of them.

eFileTexas Is Not a Docket Search

eFileTexas is the system attorneys and parties use to submit documents. It is not the public Karnes County docket database. Local civil and probate e-filing became mandatory on January 1, 2016. County criminal e-filing followed on October 1, 2018. Those dates matter when tracing older files that may have begun on paper.

Public access instead runs through Tyler, re:SearchTX where integrated, the posted district dockets, or the clerk. A 2025 OCA verification noted large Karnes docket adjustments during early 2024. Older physical cases were digitized and cleared. That history matters. An old case may need staff help. A database event can reflect conversion work rather than a new filing.

Finding Court Dates and Settings

District court dates appear in case results. They also appear in the weekly KARN docket PDFs and on the 81st/218th calendar. Court generally begins at 9:00 a.m., though schedules can change. The court provides the coordinator at 830-769-3750 and coordinator@81-218.txcourts.gov. County Court dates show up on the calendars the County Clerk links. Release paperwork supplies the setting for a criminal defendant.

Ordinary County Court settings are held in the Historic Courtroom. That room is at 101 N Panna Maria Avenue, Suite 200. Inmate dockets use the Sheriff's Office jail courtroom at 500 E Wall Street. Confirm both the time and the place before traveling. The Karnes County court calendar explains the calendar codes, resets, and missed-setting routes in detail.

Docket Snapshot or Certified Record

A weekly PDF answers a narrow scheduling question. It shows which matters landed on a particular criminal, civil, trial, additions, or DWOP list. A complete court file may hold petitions, answers, motions, notices, orders, judgments, and exhibits. The snapshot never reproduces those. Even a portal event line does not guarantee the document image is viewable online.

For an official copy, identify the office that holds the record. Then identify the exact item you need. The County Clerk's posted schedule lists plain copies at $1 per page. Certified copies cost $1 per page plus $5 for certification. Its request form carries a $10 request-processing line. It also notes that the office does not perform searches. Verify current pricing and scope before sending payment. The District Clerk's fee sheet is dated 2017. So confirm current district charges rather than quoting that legacy document.

Online docketUseful for finding a cause, event, or setting; not necessarily certified or complete.
Plain copyReproduction from the custodian without the clerk’s certification.
Certified copyClerk-certified reproduction requested from the office holding the original.

Public Access to Dockets

Texas court access follows more than one rule. The Public Information Act covers a wide share of government records. But Government Code §552.003 leaves the judiciary outside the Act's usual definition of a governmental body. So judicial records travel a different road. Rule 12 governs those, while filed case records answer to court rules, statutes, and orders. What access you get for a Karnes County court docket depends on the record's type. It also depends on the office that holds it.

Key Rules:

Texas Rule of Judicial Administration 12 - provides the request route for public judicial records while recognizing exceptions.

Texas Government Code Chapter 552 - supplies the Public Information Act framework and its judiciary distinction.

Texas Rules of Civil Procedure 21c and 76a - address sensitive data in filed documents and the procedure for sealing court records.

Texas Family Code Chapter 58 - restricts access to specified juvenile records.

Why a Missing File Proves Little

A blank result on a Karnes County docket search does not mean much on its own. You may have the wrong court. Or the name may be misspelled. The cause number may be bad, or a date range that misses the filing. New matters often have not reached the public index yet. Some records sit behind a restricted document, a sealed case, or the juvenile confidentiality rule. Older paper files were never fully converted. So read a no-result search one way only: that channel did not return the item. The case may still exist, and nothing about it was dismissed.

Work the problem in steps. Re-run the search with the cause number and widen the dates. Expecting a district setting? Check the weekly PDF. Then contact the office that holds the docket. Name the court and the exact document title. For a city or JP citation, do not send a name-only request to the County Clerk. That docket belongs to the city or the precinct. And the County Clerk form expressly says it does not perform searches.

The Clerk and Docket Records

Two elected clerk offices split recordkeeping in Karnes County. The District Clerk keeps district civil, family, felony, and juvenile files, and links to the district coordinators and weekly dockets. The County Clerk handles constitutional County Court misdemeanor, probate, and assigned county civil records. Justice and municipal clerks stay separate. Call before you visit, above all when the case level is unclear.

The County Clerk’s Two-Window Day

Weekday hours for the County Clerk run 8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. A lunch closure sits in between. Registers and doors shut at 4:45 p.m. That cutoff is real for anyone coming in for a copy or filing. After all, the stated day runs to 5:00. Phone, fax, mail, and in-person channels are all listed. The public-record request form can go by mail or fax.

Include the cause number, the exact document, the court, and a date range with any request. Ask staff to confirm the current fee and accepted payment before mailing funds. Note one trap: the District Clerk's request-for-process form covers issuance and service tasks, not certified copies. Wanting a district record is not a reason to use it.

What Karnes Caseload Numbers Count

Split your Karnes County docket search by court. The Texas OCA FY2024 reports make the reason plain. Karnes justice courts reported 2,456 added civil and criminal activity items. They logged 2,680 disposed items in the reporting year, with 6,080 ending items across the combined categories. District civil came in at 179 added and 135 disposed. Family reported 101 added and 89 disposed. These are activity categories. They are not unique people, findings of fault, or convictions.

747.8approximate county square miles

Karnes County counted 14,710 residents in the 2020 census. Four precincts, several incorporated places, and a five-county district system make the area too varied for one 'traffic docket' or a single courthouse counter. Always keep the source year and column labels attached to OCA figures.

Court Dockets by City in Karnes County

Municipal and justice records stay with the issuing court. Kenedy offers the county's clearest online municipal citation lookup. Karnes City sends citation holders to its municipal office. It asks for five business days after issuance. Falls City has an overlapping municipal and JP2 public-office trail. Confirm from the citation itself. Runge posts no separate municipal portal, and Runge-area justice matters begin with JP4. Higher misdemeanors, probate, family, civil, and felony cases move to the right county or district channel. That channel completes the Karnes County court docket.

District Clerk Denise Rodriguez keeps 81st and 218th Judicial District Court felony, civil, family, and juvenile files at 101 N Panna Maria, Suite 104, in Karnes City, the same building as the Historic Courtroom (Suite 200) where County Court is generally heard. County Clerk Jamie Leal's office for County Court misdemeanor, probate, and county civil records is a separate building nearby at 210 W Calvert, Suite 100, so a district-record request and a County Clerk request are not at the same address.
